BELLINGHAM – The west leg of East Smith Road, where it intersects with Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542) east of Bellingham, will close for 14 days starting Monday morning, Sept. 19.

During the two-week closure, the Washington State Department of Transportation and contractor Boss Construction Inc. will continue building a roundabout at the intersection.

Mount Baker Highway will remain open during the closure; there just won’t be access to and from Smith Road. Access to Allison Road will remain open from Smith Road.

As roundabout construction ramps up, more equipment and crews will be working on and around the highway. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the work zone. Drivers should plan for delays especially during the morning and afternoon commutes.

Crews expect to complete and open the roundabout in October.

COUNTY – A level 3 sex offender has registered a residential address in the 5900 block of South Pass Road. Level III sex offenders are deemed high risk to re-offend.

According to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Preston Daryl Sant, 48, has molested at least 10 girls and boys under the age of 10.

Preston Daryl Sant, level 3 sex offender.

Records state, “File material indicates that Sant has an extensive history of similarly molesting at least 10 additional male and female children (from 3- to 10-years-old) on hundreds of occasions over a period of 25-plus years. Material also indicates that Sant has participated in acts of voyeurism and indecent exposure. He used his position as a babysitter and friend of the victims’ family to access the children.”

Sant is six feet tall and weighs approximately 230 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes.

County-wide numbers
There are a total of seven level 3 sex offenders registered in eastern Whatcom County, and a total of 53 in all of Whatcom County. Of these numbers, 11 offenders are listed as non-compliant, meaning failure to register or verify residential address, and an additional 11 offenders are listed as transients, with no specific address.

A complete list of level 2 and 3 sex offenders can be accessed online through the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office webpage under www.co.whatcom.wa.us. Click on Sheriff’s Office, followed by the link to “Sex Offenders.” The database allows for a search of offenders within a 2-mile radius, or to view the full list of offenders registered with the Sheriff’s Office.
